Who is a Webmaster? 
Webmaster is a person responsible for maintaining a website. For a large website, this could be a person managing many web developers and web designers. For a small website or blog, this could be website owner or blogger.

What are Webmaster Tools?
Webmaster tools let a webmaster access and analyze information, statistics, and issues about website. Webmasters can see useful information such as Search Engine Rankings, Pages indexing, Keywords information, External and internal links to website. Webmaster can than use the information to take corrective actions.

What is a Webmaster Tools Account?
A Webmaster Tools Account let webmasters access information about website and than let them take actions to help Search Engine crawl and index website in better way and fix certain errors. Webmaster need to verify ownership of the website by uploading a file or adding a Meta tag in the code. After that, actions can be taken such as adding a sitemap to help Search Engine index all the pages.

MSN
Website owners have been using Google and yahoo webmaster tools from a while now. MSN has also announced the public opening of its own webmaster tool. Although it’s not yet as powerful as the Google webmaster tool, it is quite useful to start with.



Right now the msn webmaster provided following services to website owners.
we can submit our website to msn search engine live.com so that it starts indexing our website. This is for free; we don’t have to pay anything for this.
We must have a msn username and password to login to msn webmaster tools, once you login to it, we can add you website and then provide the location of our site map using http://yourwebsite_address/sitemap.xml



This will ensure that msn knows about all the WebPages that our website contains.

If you add more links on our website we can resubmit the sitemap by login to webmaster and then going to url

http://webmaster.live.com/ping.aspx?siteMap=[Your sitemap web address]

Before adding our website we need to add a xml file by the name LiveSearchSiteAuth.xml in our web server root directly. We will be given the contents of this file when we add our website to webmaster central first time. Just copy and paste it in a notepad and save the notepad as “LiveSearchSiteAuth.xml”. This will make a xml file which should be put into the root directory of your web server.

What is Yahoo Webmaster tools account called?

Importance of Sitemap

Sitemaps are an easy way for webmasters to inform search engines about pages on their sites that are available for crawling. In its simplest form, a Sitemap is an XML file that lists URLs for a site along with additional metadata about each URL (when it was last updated, how often it usually changes, and how important it is, relative to other URLs in the site) so that search engines can more intelligently crawl the site.
A sitemap is a list of pages of a web site accessible to crawlers or users. It can be either a document in any form used as a planning tool for web design, or a web page that lists the pages on a web site, typically organized in hierarchical fashion. This helps visitors and search engine bots find pages on the site.
While some developers argue that site index is a more appropriately used term to relay page function, web visitors are used to seeing each term and generally associate both as one and the same. However, a site index is often used to mean an A-Z index that provides access to particular content, while a site map provides a general top-down view of the overall site contents.

XML is a coding language used, (amongst many other things) as the standard for webcrawlers to find and parse sitemaps. There is an example of an XML sitemap below (missing link to site). The instructions to the sitemap are given to the crawler bot by a Robots Text file, an example of this is also given below. Site maps can improve search engine optimization of a site by making sure that all the pages can be found. This is especially important if a site uses a dynamic access to content such as Adobe Flash or JavaScript menus that do not include HTML links.
Web crawlers usually discover pages from links within the site and from other sites. Sitemaps supplement this data to allow crawlers that support Sitemaps to pick up all URLs in the Sitemap and learn about those URLs using the associated metadata. Using the Sitemap protocol does not guarantee that web pages are included in search engines, but provides hints for web crawlers to do a better job of crawling your site.
